The popularity of cricket in Trinidad grew during this decade with the continued superior play of local standouts Gerry Gomez (all-rounder), Simpson Guillen (wicket-keeper), Prior Jones (medium-pace bowler), Ralph Legall (wicket-keeper), Sonny Ramadhin (spin bowler), and Jeffrey Stollmeyer (opening batsman), all of whom represented the W.I. Other Trinidadians who made brief appearances for the W.I. in Test Match play were Nyron Asgarali (opening batsman), Lennox Butler (fast bowler), Wilfred Ferguson (spin bowler), Hammond Furlonge (opening batsman), and Jaswick Taylor (fast bowler).
Tournaments played in the West Indies consisted of five test matches at the most populous countries: Jamaica; Trinidad; Barbados; and British Guiana. Because of the larger revenues generated, two test matches were played at either Jamaica or Trinidad. The venue in Trinidad was the Queen's Park Oval in Port-of-Spain, home of the Queen's Park Cricket Club (QPCC) which, at that time, was predominantly white.
Up to the early part of the decade, the playing surface (pitch or wicket) at the Oval was constructed of red clay that was evenly rolled and covered with a tightly-woven mat made of canvas and jute. This playing surface was called a "matting wicket" and was used by some countries around the world. Before play began every day, the matting was pulled tightly and pegged to the ground with large nails; it was removed at nighttime at the conclusion of play. Visiting teams in the 1950s that played Test Matches on the matting wicket were India (1953) and England 1954).
After using the matting wicket for 40 years, the QPCC moved to a turf wicket - an even, low-cut grass surface - in 1954. A groundsman by the name of Badge Menzies was brought in from British Guiana to help install the new turf wicket at the Oval in preparation for a visit from the Australians. The responsibility for preparing the Oval wicket would eventually fall on the shoulders of the local groundsman, Anthony "Kanhai" Emrit, for the next 25 years. After installation of the turf wicket, test matches played in Trinidad generally produced a decision; the same could not be said of the other West Indian venues.
The following is the chronology of all Test Matches played by the W.I. in the 1950s, with the Trinidadians who competed.
