CAREER:                                 Maharaj became a journalist with a local daily newspaper in Trinidad at the young age of 16, and went on to become the editor of its Sunday edition. She worked as a pubic relations officer at the University of the West Indies while, at the same time, coproducing a successful series on Trinidad television. She left Trinidad in the late-1980s and began writing fiction. She worked as a editor of an international women's magazine in Rome, Italy, and later worked in Hong Kong. In 1990, she settled in Amsterdam, Holland, where she continued her writing career.
