  • CAREER:                                  Smith began playing with Blue Diamonds in the 1960s, and later founded Jewel 22 in 1979. After promises of more prize money from the government of Trinidad & Tobago were not met, Smith led the boycott of the Panorama competition in 1979 while serving as the Acting President of the steelband governing body, Pan Trinbago. He served as President of Pan Trinbago from 1980 to 1988 and was largely credited with reinstituting the biennial Steelband Music Festival in 1980 after eight years of no competition. He was heavily involved with the furtherance of the steelband in Trinidad & Tobago and internationally, and was instrumental in its adoption as the Caribbean's musical instrument. He served as a senator in the Assembly of Trinidad & Tobago from the 1990s until his untimely death in 2003. In recognition of his contribution to the organization of steelbands in Trinidad & Tobago, the winner of the 2004 Panorama competition was awarded the the Arnim Smith Memorial Challenge Trophy by Pan Trinbago.
