CAREER: Waddell was an early member of Starlift after its inception in 1956. During the 1950s, associating with a steelband was not considered socially acceptable, but Waddell was one of a few who attended Queen's Royal College and defied the norms by playing the steelpan. He joined the Invaders Steelband in 1961 when Starlift did not function and was part of a group of QRC students (including Ray Holman, Harold Ian Jones, and Ronald C. Emrit) who were the first panmen to ever perform at the school. He returned to Starlift in 1963, but later left Starlift to form the Third World Steelband. When his playing days ended, he became a judge at Steelband Panorama competitions, locally and in the United Kingdom, and was a guest-lecturer at a university in London, England. He was also a television and radio commentator at annual Steelband Panorama competitions.
