2002 World Cup

T&T began the new millennium with high hopes of qualifying for the 2002 World Cup Finals in Japan and South Korea where 32 games were played in each of the two cities, Yokohama, Japan, and Seoul, South Korea, between May 31 and June 30, 2002. Dubbed the "Soca Warriors," the team counted on standouts such as Russell Latapy, Dwight Yorke, and Stern John to get the job done, and began the final qualifying leg under the direction of their coach, Ian Porterfield of Scotland. The top three teams from the CONCACAF Third Round playoff advanced to the World Cup Finals.

CONCACAF Semifinal - Group C: In 2000, T&T completed the Semifinal Round of play with a 5-1-0 record against Canada, Mexico, and Panama, and advanced to the Final Round. Stern John returned to England on July 18, 2000, to undergo surgery for damaged cartilage in his right knee and did not play until the fourth game of this round. In the second game against Mexico on July 23, 2000, Latapy received his second yellow card in as many games and sat out Game 3 against Panama; Dwight Yorke captained the team in has absence. T&T defeated Canada in the fourth game on September 3, 2000, and, with four consecutive victories, advanced to the final qualifying round as one of the top two teams from CONCACAF Group C.

T&T were without the services of Russell Latapy, Dwight Yorke, Stern John, Marvin Andrews, and Anthony Rougier on October 8, 2000, and lost Game 5 to Mexico by a score of 7-0 in Azteca Stadium (altitude: 7,350 feet), Mexico City. This game was marred by the ejection of Ansil Elcock in the 78th minute, after his rough tackle of Mexican striker Cuauhtemoc Blanco in the penalty box. FIFA imposed a 3-game suspension and a 5,000 Swiss francs fine on Elcock for his dangerous play. The venue for the 6th and final game on November 15, 2000, originally scheduled for Panama, was shifted to the Queen's Park Oval, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, after mutual agreement by both countries. CONCACAF Final: Controversy erupted 72 hours before the fourth game against Honduras when starters Anthony Rougier and Dwight Yorke were removed from consideration because of their inablility to provide adequate excuses for their absence from a warmup game against Panama. After apologizing for their failure to report to Panama, the players were given a reprieve and were able to participate in Game 4. Their reinstatement did little to help the squad which was trounced 4-2 by Honduras. Following the 5th game loss against the USA, Coach Ian Porterfield was relieved of his duties on June 25, 2001, and was replaced by Rene Simoes of Brazil. Porterfield's tenure lasted 16 months, from February 2000 to June 2001. Simoes promptly excluded Yorke and Latapy from consideration for the 6th game after they missed practice, and the two players retired from international competition on June 28, 2001.

The top three teams from this final qualifying round will advance to the World Cup finals. So far, the following 32 players have represented T&T in this round: Lyndon Andrews; Marvin Andrews; Addison Belfon; Reynold Carrington; Ian Cox; Nigel Daniel; Arnold Dwarika; Carlos Edwards; Ansil Elcock; Angus Eve; Gary Glasgow; Cyd Gray; Shaka Hislop; Clayton Ince; Avery John; Stern John; Russell Latapy; Dennis Lawrence; Stokely Mason; Ronnie Mauge; Errol McFarlane; Anton Pierre; Nigel Pierre; Brent Rahim; Anthony Rougier; Brent Sancho; Dale Saunders; Keyeno Thomas; Mickey Trotman; Aurtis Whitley; Evans Wise; and Dwight Yorke.
